Odd flavor, and stale tasting... December 19, 2008 Northwesterner I'd have to agree with the other reviewers. It's not very spicy, and has a strange flavor with it. I can't think of another Dal dish I've had that's tasted similar.
Not going to through it out, but definitely wouldn't buy it again...
Didn't taste very fresh December 18, 2008 W. Rumpel (Dallas, TX) I bought the Dal Bukara Black Gram Lentil Curry and really didn't like it that much. For a spicy food it tasted a bit bland and, in my opinion, didn't taste or smell good. Best served in a small portion with rice. With this in mind, I'd say the bag has about 3-4 portions. Still, if you have cooked or eaten fresh lentil curry it tastes a lot better than this.
chili substitute for me December 15, 2008 S. Kaye (Sunshine State) I live in Florida but even here we have a little bit of winter. It did get down to the 30's the other night. brrr These are the days for something warm and yummy in my tummy.
This has also become one of my favorite comfort foods. Not only do I enjoy it when it's cold outside, it's also my go-to food when feeling a little down. Something about it just makes me feel a little better. Like momma's chicken soup. Well, I'm a vegetarian so she makes my warm soup sans the bird. :)
Dal Review December 10, 2008 Jason Stringer (Hollis, NH) The Dal from Kitchens of India is very convenient to prepare. It is an ample serving for 2 people. The spicing is excellent, if not a bit salty. The consistency is also very good in comparison to eating at a good Indian restaurant.
The price is comparable to local specialty food stores.
Delish! November 30, 2008 Work of Life (Miami, Florida USA) When you love Indian food, but don't have the time to cook it, Kitchens of India is a really great alternative. I have yet to be disappointed in one of their dishes and this one is no exception. The great thing about Indian food is that they are mostly sauce (or "gravy" as they say), so I will cook up some meat or steam up some veggies and add one of these packets to make a fabulous meal. Their really aren't much in the way of veggies in these packets, but that is typical in Indian food, no matter where it comes from. American's tend to use gravy or sauce as the secondary component while Indian's use it as the primary component and sop it up with lots of bread or rice. By steaming or sauteing some additional vittles, you can really stretch one of these packets.
